We work with a collection of artist-rehabilitated, historic sites to enable artists and writers to pursue their craft in focus.  These places offer studio and living accommodations throughout a cross-section of architectural settings typical to 1890s to 1920s in small-towns like Corsicana bridging the American South and West.

SAMUELS BUILDING

IMG_9409.jpeg

Samuels Building offers a 2,000 square-foot, second floor studio entirely unaltered since its construction in 1900 with windows facing east and west, two blocks south of 100 West. Domestic accommodations will be available off-site in the neighboring Carriage District in 2021. This building represents a vital part of Corsicana’s early, vibrant Jewish community, originally opened as Samuels’ Clothiers selling fine mens’ clothing and suits. The second floor plaster walls retain graphite graffiti from the 1910s and ‘20s, layered with an early 20th century sign painter’s mock-ups. In more recent decades this building was the site for Blackmon’s Antiques. Residents making use of this studio respect its protected, historic elements.

This studio was recently added to our campus in the spring of 2020 following its acquisition and reactivation by co-founding artist Nancy Rebal and colleague Jean Searcy, and its inaugural resident Erik DeLuca from Providence, Rhode Island. The Samuels Building is owned and managed by our partner, ArtTown Corsicana, LLC.

Applicants may note interest in this studio on their application, however, its ongoing preparation may preclude access until after spring 2021.
